{birthday boy}

Ryan and I will always have a special connection.  For seven years, it really was just the two of us.  Rick was in school and gone long hours, and we didn't see much of him for several of those years, so Ryan and I were on our own.  I thoroughly enjoyed our time together, and I cherish the adventures we had and memories we made. Over the course of that time something developed between us that still hasn't waned--despite the fact that my attention is pulled in so many more directions than it was before.

The entirety of my pregnancy with the girls I wondered how he would react when they were born.  Even when I was put on bedrest several times, and Ryan was left to his own entertainment while I laid on the couch, I was concerned with how he might react to his life and everything he knew changing completely. I knew it would probably go one of two ways--really well...or not.

It's been so sweet to watch Ryan as a big brother. I can honestly say that there has not been even one time that he's complained, or said that he wished that things were back to the way they used to be.  He has embraced being a big brother in every way, and even seems to think we should have another one.  (Hmmmm.  The jury is still out on that one, and they might be out for awhile.  It's a whole other conversation for a whole other day.)

Is there the typical arguing and fighting?  Yes.  Does he love to absolutely tease his sisters to the brink of their patience and mine?  Yes.  But he also reads stories, feeds snacks, snuggles on the couch, and helps me more than I can ever say.

He is a good boy, and I'm so grateful for him.  He's funny, so smart, writes the greatest comic strip, loves Harry Potter and art and cooking and EATING and computers and playing football in the backyard. He has handles being diabetic and all the extra "stuff" that goes along with it with the maturity of someone much older than him.  He's my boy!

....

For his birthday dinner he requested Olive Garden--his favorite thing ever is the Never Ending Pasta Bowl--and he was in heaven.  This kid kills me.  Give him a good plate of pasta and he's happy.

He isn't a cake lover, so when we got home he blew out the candle on his birthday ice cream...Extreme Moose Tracks.

His birthday present request?  A gift card to Barnes & Noble.

That's my boy.  :)

Happy Birthday Ryan--I love you!

Every time I read anything you post about him, I am so impressed with what a great young man he is. I've been reading your blog for awhile and he sure is growing up.

Hope he has a fabulous birthday. And, I agree with Andee--good kids come from GREAT parents.

So glad you two have a special bond! I can only imagine. While I have a good relationship with each of my children it is hard to find that bond sometimes when spread so thin. I'm sure every parent has that with their first child I would think. Maybe not I guess but anyway, it was a great post about your son. Happy Birthday to him!
